What is Endocrinology?
The Endocrine System is a group of glands and organs that make hormones. Glands and Hormones are substances that help control activities in the body. Different types of organs control reproduction, metabolism, and growth and development. Hormones also control the way we respond to surroundings and provide the proper amount of energy and nutrition our body needs to function. The glands that make up the system include the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal, pituitary, and the hypothalmus.

How does Endocrinology apply to Occupational Therapy?
If our patient was diagnosed by an Endocrinologist with Diabetes, Osteoporosis, or Hypertension we would address how to adapt there everyday lifestyle to accomodate their new diagnosis. If our patient was diagnosed with Diabetes we would address these issues: Health Management, Nutrition Management, Skin Care, Emotional Regulation, Stress Management and Leisure Participation. If our patient was diagnosed with Osteoporosis we would address these issues: Dressing, Bathing Safety and give them adaptive equipment such as shower mats, shower chair, long handled reacher and a long handled sponge to prevent falls or injuries during dressing and bathing activities. We would also do a Home Evaluation to make sure our patient could get around their home safely. If our Patient was diagnosed with Hypertension we would address these issues: Health Management, Nutrition Management, Medication Management, Stress Management and Energy Conservation.
